Undoubtedly there are many peculiar traditions in every corner of the world, but the Alpabzug in Switzerland is just fantastic!

The event is sort of a vibrant cow fashion show where the cattle walk along the street wearing beautiful flower headpieces being the stars of the pageant. But why do they do this? Is it really a cow fashion runway? Are Channel, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana designing accessories for cows? Well, not yet... I mean, not that I know, but the farmers are the ones who create all this colorful ornaments and attire their cattle for what it is the gala day of the year!

During summer, the farmers take their cattle up in the Alps, there, they can enjoy the good weather and eat all the fresh grassland, just short after summer finishes or autumn begins they bring them back to their farms to protect them from the upcoming winter, so this action is called the "descent of the Alps" or how they call it in Swiss dialect Alpabzug / Alpabfahrt.

This tradition is well known in the whole country, there are many Alpazugs / Alpabzüge during the months of September and October, making this a great festivity in many towns. I had the opportunity to go to Schüpfheim, a small town located in the Kanton of Luzern, where once a year the main avenue turns into a huge extraordinary runway, decked out with live folk Swiss music, typical dances, hundreds of excited spectators from all ages; some of them laughing, cheering, eating raclette or drinking beer, while they wait on the sidewalks for the highlight of the show, the all adorned eleganza cows.

If you visit Switzerland during this time, do not miss the opportunity to experience this unique tradition, with no doubt a Pasarela your will never forget. Plan to arrive early if you want to admire the party from start to finish, front row seats as always fly away, specially if you are keen on taking some pics of the beautiful models, here are mine, scroll down and check them all!

For more info about the Alpabzüge, visit Switzerland´s official tourismus website, and find all dates and places where these great celebrations are taking place. Oh!... one more thing, if you found this tradition very cool, share it with your friends, Thank You!
